Antoine Peris was a researcher-in-residence at the KB in 2018.
His project ‘EpIC: the Evolution of the Image of Cities as presented by Dutch local newspapers’ explored the question: How can we use computers to investigate how the image of cities in local and national newspapers has developed?
Project
Antoine Peris researched the general perception and representation of cities in historical newspapers, and how this changed over time.
His first blogpost goes into the process of collecting the corpus, using a mix of Named Entity Recognition (NER) and string matching to find mentions of cities in newspapers. The second blogpost describes an analysis of the Volkskrant section of the dataset, as an example of what can be done with this data. It goes into visualizations of the geographical coverage of newspapers over time and explores the possible overrepresentation of certain cities in the news.
This work resulted in the DIGGER dataset.
