Joep Leerssen is a comparative and literary historian; his focus is the history of national identities, of cultural (self-)stereotyping, and nationalism over the period 1750-1950. Leerssen has written many authoritative articles and books on these subjects and is the editor of the Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe (ERNiE, Amsterdam UP 2018, also online at http://ernie.uva.nl), which analyses the complexities of transnational cultural history with the help of advanced network visualizations.
Joep Leerssen was the KB/NIAS Fellow for Digital Humanities, 2017-2018.
