Melvin Wevers is a PhD student in the Cultural History department at Utrecht University. His research applies computational text analysis to study the role of the United States as a reference culture in twentieth-century Dutch newspaper debates on consumer goods.
He also worked on the eScience project ShiCo: Shifting Concepts Over Time in which he used word embeddings to study conceptual change in large historical corpora. In Spring 2016, he was a research fellow of the ‘culture analytics’ program hosted by the UCLA’s Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics. At the KB, he will work on the computational analyses of images in newspaper advertisement.
