Vicky Breemen

Dr Vicky Breemen is Assistant Professor in law & technology at Utrecht University’s Centre for Intellectual Property Law (CIER; Molengraaff Institute for Private Law) and the Montaigne Centre for Rule of Law and Administration of Justice.  A central thread in Vicky’s interdisciplinary research is the interplay between law, culture and technology. More information about Vicky’s research is available at the UU page.

Vicky Breemen was a Researcher in Residence from August 2024 – February 2025, working together with Kelly Breemen. Their project centers on ‘bias’ and discusses how the concept can be qualified in theory and subsequently quantified in digital cultural heritage practice, with gender in the KB’s digital newspaper collections as a case study. The aim of the project is not to de-bias collections, but to increase transparency and awareness of potential biases among both users of the digitised collections and cultural heritage institutions themselves.
