Dr Frank Harbers was a researcher-in-residence at the KB in 2016.
His project ‘Discerning Journalistic Styles: Exploring Automated Analysis of Journalism’s Modes of Expression’ explored the question: How can we investigate the development of the journalistic form, in particular genre classification, through automated content analysis?

Project
Frank Harbers’ project focused on classifying historical newspaper articles on genre. His first blogpost introduces this topic. His second blogpost goes into more detail on the project. After matching previously collected metadata to the newspaper articles in Delpher, a classifier was trained for the task of genre identification.
This work resulted in the Genre classifier tool.
